Description

Thoroughly Tuscan fare, located just outside of the city walls.

Since 1979 “Alla Vecchia Bettola” has worked to preserve and continue the traditional Florentine cuisine. The cozy trattoria originates in a time when the cuisine of Florence was being neglected in favor of a cuisine that tended more and more towards an Italian “standard” cuisine and international appeals. Husband and wife, Loriano and Carla, aimed to bring that focus back towards the old Tuscan flavors.

Description

A pretty piazza, a beautifully lit church and outstanding food. Set in one of the prettiest tree lined piazzas in Florence, the Accademia restaurant is right opposite the church of San Marco which is beautifully lit in the evenings. This one room restaurant offers a friendly welcome and the informal, English speaking waiters are suitably attentive not intrusive. Award winning salumi feature among the antipasti and there are excellent old fashioned primi (try the spaghetti with tiny meatballs of veal). Main courses are of a constantly high standard, including delicious stuffed rabbit, tender veal steak and an outstanding beef fillet with juniper berries. A blackboard announces the availability of fresh fish and shellfish in addition to the main menu. Alternatively, order the commendable tasting menu and have a different glass of wine included with each course. The extensive wine list which runs to about two hundred and fifty labels, has been carefully compiled by Gianni, one of the owners, a qualified wine expert.

Description

An old favourite near Santa Maria Novella.

Many things have been written about this quirky niche of old Florence, to which people come for the atmosphere and a taste of past times.

The charm of this place is that it genuinely has remained unchanged for many years. The walls are half tiled in plain white and above them there are news cuttings and memorabilia of a famous clientele of years gone by.
The waiters wear an old fashioned uniform of grey jackets tucked into their white aprons and have a no-nonsense approach.
